Cornwall Sustainability Awards 2018 Finalists

The time has come to announce our finalists for this year’s awards, the CSA’s Class of 2018!

First of all, we’d really like to thank everyone who applied to the Cornwall Sustainability Awards this year. We received a record number of applications, which made it challenging for our judges to choose our finalists from. The judges were blown away the range and quality of applications, so well done to all those who applied.

Our finalists this year are as follows, in alphabetical order:

Arco2 Architecture

ARCO2 set out to create and provide the most sustainable properties in the region with sustainability and preservation of our environment at the core of their business. With a talented team of 10 employees they have become experts in their field, producing beautiful healthy buildings based upon Passive House principles.

B4

There is only one honeybee native to Britain. Its survival continues to be threatened by hybridisation and disease thanks to the importation of other strains of honeybee.  With the help of academics, politicians and public education facilities, and by securing habitat reserves, the B4 Project promotes sustainable beekeeping without imports.

Beach Guardian

Beach Guardian organise community beach cleans and conduct educational workshops with schools and other groups so that we are connecting people with the environment to improve health and wellbeing. We engage with businesses to enable their staff to volunteer and reduce their unnecessary plastics!

Boardmasters

Boardmasters brings you the very best of surf, music and entertainment all to the backdrop of stunning Cornish coastline. Watergate Bay plays host to twelve stages, ranging from local talent to international headliners; and legendary surf mecca Fistral Beach showcases World Surf League pro surf competitions, live music and much more.

Bodds

Environmental and social values are at the heart of every decision we make at Bodds.
Our aim is to create swimwear for women and girls that enables confident outdoor activity without over-sexualisation. All our products use Econyl, which is made from recycled plastic waste, thus actively reducing the amount of plastic waste in our environment.

Build Solar

Standard solar technology is limited by the area and visual impact. We want to overcome these limitations by incorporating optically integrated solar technologies within the building envelope. We aim to BUILD integrated, affordable, efficient, and attractive SOLAR technologies as part of the building’s architecture with minimal impact on the environment.

Camel Community Supported Agriculture

Camel Community Supported Agriculture based near Wadebridge runs one of the UK’s first not-for-profit community-led veggie box schemes and has over 60 member households (~130 people).
We grow vegetables to organic principles (sustainably, environmentally and socially responsible), providing our community with fresh, seasonal, highly nutritious food, with minimal food miles, plus the chance to learn new skills and have fun!

Cerenety

Cerenety is an eco-campsite and rescue-animal centre, ran with the help of volunteers. Cerenety is sustainable, educational, fun and encouraging. We learn how best to care for our environment whilst teaching others through experience and demonstration, raising awareness and spreading knowledge.  Cerenety is the love of people, animals and the environment in which we all live

Charmian Larke

Charmian’s working life is devoted to helping Cornwall become more resilient by becoming Zero Carbon, with more local energy and food production. Charmian works on Zero Carbon and renewable resource assessments, policies and installations with councils, business and communities. Charmian also gives talks on the physical realities of our energy – not money- economy.

Colas

Carnsew Quarry in Cornwall is part of the international Colas Group, a world leader in the construction and maintenance of transport infrastructure. Our Quarry at Carnsew produces high quality granite to meet demand in all sectors of the construction industry, and asphalt products incorporating recycled material to the local market.

CommunityRepaint Cornwall

Nationally 50 million litres of paint goes to waste every year. CommunityRepaint Cornwall works to reuse part and full tins of paint – keeping them out of landfill and helping local residents and charities access affordable paint to improve their homes and buildings. The initiative works with multiple partners and, as a social enterprise, we also provide employability and enterprise services including volunteering and work experience to NEET young people and other groups.

CORMAC

CORMAC is proud to deliver a diverse range of services that contribute significantly to the local environment, community and economy. By being clear in our aim to continually improve and actively lead, we are passionate about promoting positive changes and achieving positive outcomes for Cornwall’s people and wildlife.

Cornish Lithium

Cornish Lithium was established in 2016 to explore Cornwall for lithium, a vital metal for clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles and power storage. The company sees great potential to extract lithium directly from underground “hot springs” and is using innovative modern digital exploration techniques across the County

Cultivate Cornwall CIC

Cultivate Cornwall CIC are helping hundreds of people in deprived areas of Cornwall by providing opportunities that bring communities together, overcoming social isolation, building confidence and growing skills all using industry surplus textiles.
The company identified a waste problem faced by businesses and have used this to strengthen the communities they work in.

Ellie Jackson

Wild Tribe Heroes are a series of children’s books teaching primary and preschool children about the problems of ocean plastic . Cornish based author Ellie Jackson has visited over 40 schools in Cornwall delivering free assemblies to over 8,000 children inspiring them and their schools to take action and make a difference.

Emily Stevenson

Emily is a 21-year-old Marine Biology graduate. While at University she was the Community Volunteer of the year and has since formed ‘Beach Guardian’ to educate people about marine plastics. Her research, during and after university, looks at plastics found on Cornish beaches and the organisms that ‘live’ upon them.

EMMO

Emmo is a family run and female led business. We are committed to and passionate about delivering affordable renewable energy to all the homes in and around the South West. Our ethos is to enable individuals and organisations to be part of creating a sustainable world for our children. We are doing our bit for their future!

Encounter Cornwall

Encounter Cornwall has been running guided kayak trips on the river Fowey since 2006. Owners David & Karen have recently created an off grid, sustainable building, with a meeting room/classroom and 4 ensuite bedrooms, set in 12 acres above the estuary, to develop and complement their work on the water.

Falmouth Exeter Plus

Falmouth Exeter Plus manages and delivers shared campus services and facilities in Cornwall on behalf of Falmouth University and the University of Exeter. Together we aim to create an ecologically, economically and socially responsible environment for all students and staff, with sustainability embedded throughout organisation and into our 2030 strategy

Fishy Filaments

Fishy Filaments is the world’s first marine plastics to 3D printing filament recycler. Working closely with Newlyn Harbour we take used commercial fishing gear and transform it into the raw material for cutting edge manufacturing technology.

Fourth Element

Fourth Element OceanPositive products are made using recycled ghost nets reclaimed from the sea by divers, along with other discarded waste and turned into ECONYL® yarn to use in a growing range of swimwear, rashguards and ocean wear.

They recently launched Mission2020, a global initiative to show the commitment of the diving industry to protect and preserve the oceans for the future, and are well on the way to achieving their aim to eliminate the use of single-use plastic in the packaging of all its products by 2020 and to continue to develop new products (and re-develop its existing products) using recycled materials wherever possible.

Frugi

Frugi creates gorgeously bright, durable and fun organic cotton children’s clothes.
We are certified by GOTS and the Soil Association meaning we adhere to stringent criteria in both our manufacturing and social accountability.
We are proud to be an ethical business and donate 1% of our turnover each year to charity.

Green Level

Green Level is a construction company with a mindful approach to building. Providing project management, design & skilled construction, Green Level strive for sustainability, energy efficiency and excellence. Green Level is all about building with a conscience.

Gwenen Eco Wraps

Gwenen Eco Wraps was started in 2018 by Angie Gall (a marine ecologist) and Becky Pope (a doctor) in response to the plastic pollution crisis in our seas. The handmade wax wraps (both beeswax and vegan versions are available) are made from organic cotton and high quality Cornish beeswax.  Sustainability is a core value of the organisation and in supplying outlets across Cornwall we are helping to change behaviour towards reusable food coverings.

Harvest Cornwall

Harvest Cornwall is an MCS certified, family-run business based in Cornwall. Supplying and installing high-quality renewable energy systems, including Ground & Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar PV. Combined with our Underfloor and Central Heating installations we provide our clients with project-specific, long term solutions to reduce bills & improve comfort.

Imerys

Sustainable Development is an essential component of the Imerys‘ long term strategy to support growth while meeting the expectations of our stakeholders and promoting social responsibility, environmental stewardship, corporate governance and business ethics

Using sophisticated technical processes, Imerys transforms a large variety of minerals into high value speciality products essential for its customers’ products or manufacturing processes.  In the UK, Imerys manages the extraction, processing and marketing of minerals including Kaolins, Ball Clays and Calcium Carbonate.

Keep Cornwall Fed

Keep Cornwall Fed is a social enterprise catering company, based in Cornwall. From street food and big pan cooking to a’la carte, we cater for events, weddings, festivals, corporate functions and private parties. Using our profit for purpose, every meal we sell helps us give back to those in food poverty.

Kudhva

KUDHVA (Cornish for hide-out) is an off-grid holiday and accommodation experience. The site is home to 4 architectural two man cabins (also called Kudhva), built on stilts as temporary structures to avoid negatively impacting the flora & fauna and a six-man cabin, powered by solar, nestled near our waterfall.

Low Carbon Society

The loan fund was established in 2010, as part of a direct response to enabling community owned renewable energy and the transition to a sustainable low carbon economy, whilst empowering our local Cornish communities.
£3.25million has been invested enabling over 10,807MWh of clean green community energy, saving 4,451tonnes of Co2e

Lower Marsh Farm

Lower Marsh Farm Self-Catering Holiday Accommodation & Residential Retreats is in the beautiful Tamar Valley. Sustainably managed with over 40 acres which includes a Salt Marsh Nature Reserve, River Tamar frontage, woodland, orchard and meadows. Facilities include a tennis court, hot tubs, games room and children’s nature based play areas.

Mother Ivey’s Bay Holiday Park

Mother Ivey’s Bay Holiday Park has fully embraced sustainability, which is at the heart of the business, caring for their team, their guests, their community, as well as local wildlife and the environment

Naked Solar

At Naked Solar, the environment is at the heart of everything we do. Helping customers to make an informed choice regarding renewable energy sources for their homes and business, has made Naked Solar the leading Solar PV installer in the South West. With recognition at National and European level the icing on the cake. Odyssey Innovation

Born in Cornwall’s seas, Odyssey Innovation specialises in circular economy solutions for marine plastics. Challenged by the lack of facilities to recycle marine plastic recovered whilst diving, director Rob Thompson decided to recycle the plastic into kayaks, which are now being used to clean the inaccessible parts of our coastlines

Packshare

Packshare is a new way of thinking about mail-order packaging. In our increasingly mail-order obsessed world everything seems to arrive wrapped in bubblewrap inside 5 cardboard boxes. Packshare.org helps you find local businesses who can reuse that packaging to stop it being thrown away or needlessly recycled

Pentillie Castle & Estate

17th century Pentillie Castle is a historic family-run business offering 5-star luxury B&B, exclusive hire for weddings and special occasions, and large outdoor events. Pentillie’s mission is to overcome the challenges of a Grade II* listed building, embracing responsible ethics and sustainability in the hospitality industry without compromising on standards.

Perimeters

Liskeard based, Perimeters rents reusable recyclable hoarding to construction sites in the South West. Each meter of Perimeters’ hoarding in use will divert 45kg of waste from landfill. Over the last year Perimeters reusable hoarding diverted more than 200,000 kg waste from landfill in the South West of England

Plastic Oceanic

Price Properties Limited

Price Properties Limited, a small family company based in West Cornwall, specialises in the repair of historic buildings with a strong emphasis on the sustainability and longevity of their work.  With their team of skilled craftsmen they like to keep it local and keep it green!

Roddas

Rodda’s Clotted Cream started more than 128 years ago, when Eliza Jane Rodda began making the delicacy in her farmhouse kitchen, in the heart of Cornwall. The business, now in its fifth generation, is still crafting its Cornish clotted cream in the very same way it did all those years ago, through cherished family recipes and time-honored traditions.

Solar Frames

The Cornish Rocker is a seasonally adjustable solar frame, which increases the output of solar panels by up to 40% in the winter and 8% year round. Designed and manufactured in Cornwall, we work with companies throughout Cornwall to install custom made systems nationwide, for the same price as a fixed system.

St Austell Printing Company

St Austell Printing Company is a family-run company who embrace the environment and sustainability in everything we do. Our purpose-built factory was awarded a BREEAM excellent rating, we only use paper from recycled or sustainable sources, we recycle 100% of our paper waste, generate our own solar power and much more to ensure we stay as sustainable as possible.

Sue Sayer

Since 2000, Sue Sayer has photo identified individual grey seals (Cornwall’s globally rare speciality sentinel species) and can recognise hundreds by eye. In 2004, Sue set up Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust – a well-respected, independent, evidence-based conservation charity inspiring thousands of volunteers to protect seals nationally and internationally

Surfers Against Sewage

Surfers Against Sewage is creating Plastic Free Communities to free where we live from single-use. Wherever you live, whether you’re on shore or inland, we’re uniting communities in the fight against single-use plastics. It’s not about removing all plastic from our lives. It’s about kicking our addiction to avoidable single-use plastic, and changing the system that produces it.

The CHAOS Group and Cornwall Food Action

The CHAOS Group and Cornwall Food Action work alongside food suppliers to reduce the amount of food sent to landfill. CFA identifies wholesale food waste and CHAOS make collections from super markets. All food is then re-distributed to organisations, vulnerable groups and families in food poverty.
By collaborating together we are making a greater difference than we could have achieved separately.

The Cornwall Beaver Project

A partnership between Woodland Valley Farm, Cornwall Wildlife Trust and the University of Exeter. In June 2017, two beavers were released into a streamside enclosure above Ladock, a village that floods. The beavers have built a series of dams, creating great wildlife habitat and slowing the flow of water, demonstrating the potential for alleviating flooding

The Eco Park

The Eco Park is a unique community resource. It offers a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces for public use and private hire, plus a campsite, all set within 42 acres of organic farmland, in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the north Cornish coast. In addition to providing spaces for working and events, Eco Park also provides organic growing space for local people and training and education in traditional and sustainable skills.

The National Trust

The National Trust’s Land, Outdoors and Nature strategy has set out to restore a healthier, more beautiful natural environment at a landscape scale.  The principles of creating better, bigger and more joined up wildlife habitats has been adopted by the Trust to help focus delivery for nature.

The ReFill Store

The ReFill Store opened in May 2018, selling a wide range of food, hygiene/dental care and cleaning products without packaging. We provide people with the choice of shopping plastic-free encouraging a reduce/reuse ethos and encourage customers to bring their own containers to refill. We transform the process of product to customer making it with-out the single use plastic packaging. We are also a support network for people reducing plastic.

Tinkebu

Tinkebu make sustainable and stylish wooden toys and kids’ furniture.  Our contemporary designs are inspired by our Cornish home; lovingly and robustly handmade, to be passed down from generation to generation. Our products are made from reclaimed and sustainably-sourced materials and for every toy you buy we plant a tree.

Un_rap

Un_rap – the zero waste shop designed to eliminate single-use plastics from our lives and reduce our impact on the environment. We pride ourselves on giving sustainable choice back to the consumer.

Urban Biodiversity

Urban Biodiversity is a social enterprise that aims to reduce social deprivation by developing urban sites into places that offer community benefit and a fair chance for all. Working with local communities we create high quality environmental urban spaces that provide social inclusion, environmental education, training and employability opportunities, food security and community events

The Enterprise Space for Advanced Manufacturing (ESAM) is a new BREEAM Excellent workspace dedicated to growing advanced manufacturing, engineering and low carbon businesses in Cornwall. ESAM is the first phase of the new Carluddon Technology Park, situated within the West Carclaze Eco-Community regeneration initiative.

Wasted Apple

We are a family who have discovered the joy and challenge of making traditional cider and real apple juice. We’re firm believers in reducing food miles, minimising waste, sourcing locally and creating a sustainable environment. Hence we make our cider from only Cornish apples that would otherwise go to waste.
